Withania Somnifera As Herbal Remedy for Fertility, Rejuvenative & In Reproductive Health

Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is a great rejuvenative herb. Rejuvenating herbal remedies are helpful to retard the aging process. They are valuable in checking the progression of many degenerative disorders.

Rejuvenation is dependent on all the tissue in our body. It must be deep enough to penetrate up to cellular or biochemical level. Otherwise it could be merely skin deep.

Many degenerative disorders like arthritis, loose skin, hardening of arteries are related to aging process. They are also supported by such herbs.

Ayurvedic Rejuvenation Herbal Remedy – Ashwagandha:

Indian winter cherry is a great rejuvenative herb in ayurvedic medicine. The rejuvenative property is characterized by the ability to nourish all the tissues – lymph, blood, muscles, fat, bones, marrow and nervous tissue, semen. Bone and muscles and semen are especially supported with its use.

It strengthens the nerves, promotes sound sleep, improves memory and sexual power, increases vitality, is anti-aging and lessens graying of hair.

Its well co-ordinated action on muscle and nerves make it a suitable choice for athletes. Psychomotor coordination is enhanced to result in great athletic performance.

Ashwagandha is rich in iron and increases hemoglobin. Ashwagandha berries are blood purifier.

Ashwagandha – Herbal Remedies for Degenerative Disorders:

It is found to offer great value in degenerative disorders like arthritis, diabetes, hypertension and nervous and physical debility or weakness.

WS was found to reduce inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. Its high steroidal content was found to be more potent than hydrocortisone in animal and human arthritis.

Indian Winter Cherry & Glycosaminoglycans Synthesis:

The effect of W. somnifera on glycosaminoglycan synthesis in the granulation tissue of carrageenin-induced air pouch granuloma was studied. W. somnifera was shown to exert significant inhibitory effect on incorporation of 35S into the granulation tissue.

The uncoupling effect on oxidative phosphorylation (ADP/O ratio reduction) was also observed in the mitochondria of granulation tissue. Further, Mg2+ dependent ATPase activity was found to be influenced by W. somnifera. W. somnifera also reduced the succinate dehydrogenase enzyme activity in the mitochondria of granulation tissue.

Herbal Remedy with Anticancer Activity – Ashwagandha As Potent Inhibitor Of Angiogenesis:

In Ayurveda , the major Traditional Indian medicine system, extracts from W. somnifera are distinctively employed for the treatment of arthritis and menstrual disorders. Because these conditions involve angiogenic processes we hypothesized that the W. somnifera extracts might contain angiogenesis inhibitors.

Withaferin A is shown to exert potent anti-angiogenic activity in vivo at doses that are 500-fold lower than those previously reported to exert anti-tumor activity in vivo. In conclusion, our findings identify a novel mode of action of withaferin A, which highlights the potential use of this natural product for cancer treatment or prevention.

Ashwagandha – Aphrodisiac Herbal Remedy for Sexual Wellbeing:

Ayurvedic texts contain several references to aphrodisiac action of this botanical. It increases the quantity and quality of semen and sperm. It restores sexual health and vitality. It is not a type of stimulant herb that stimulates sexual drive overnight. On regular use it provides greater benefits than stimulants.

Research showed its ability to produce Nitric oxide and thereby its potential to dilate blood vessels.

Another research indicates that more than 70% of persons taking WS for a month felt increased libido and sexual function.

Ashwagandha As An Sperm Count Increasing Herbal Remedy:

Abdel et al found the effect the effect of lyophilized aqueous extract of Cynomorium coccineum and Withania somnifera on testicular development and on serum levels of testosterone, ICSH and FSH in immature male Wistar rats.

Testicular weight was increased notably. Histological examination revealed an apparent increase in the diameter of seminiferous tubules and the number of seminiferous tubular cell layers in the testes of treated rats as compared with control ones. Extracts of both plants elicited notable spermatogenesis in immature rats but C. coccineum was more effective than W. somnifera in that respect.

It was concluded that extracts of both plants have a direct spermatogenic influence on the seminiferous tubules of immature rats presumably by exerting a testosterone-like effect.

Ashwagandha – Herbal Remedy for Female Reproductive System:

The same group of researchers explored the effect of WS in female rats. In 25-day-old rats, extracts of both plants elicited significant changes in gonadotrophin levels coupled with a significant increase in ovarian weight and profound folliculogenesis.

Numerous primary, secondary, tertiary and antral follicles were present. A distinct zona pellucida was not seen and the oocyte was often detached. In 17-day-old animals there was a significant increase-in body weight but without significant changes in the ovarian weight and folliculogenesis.
