If you become an Audiologist, you will be working with people who have trouble with their hearing, balance issues, or other problems that can be traced back to the workings of the ear. Audiologists use an assortment of tests to determine how well or how poorly a person can hear or to measure pressure in the ears that dictate balance.
Based on test results, as an Audiologist, you will treat the condition that is found. This is done by cleaning or draining the ear, or by using hearing devices or implants. It is important to note that you can become an Audiologist with only a Master’s degree, but you cannot prescribe medication or perform surgical procedures without a doctorate degree in all states.
Audiology is not only an important field; it is also a growing field in healthcare. Practicing as an audiologist requires at least a Master’s degree, but it is expected in the future that a doctorate will be required. Those who hold a Master’s degree can expect an entry level position at this time, and those with doctorates will be given the best career opportunities. Many Audiologists begin their careers with the Master’s, and work towards the doctorate while holding down full time jobs in Audiology.
Audiologists work in an office setting, where they see patients daily. The majority of Audiologists work in educational settings, or for educational services. Licensing is required in all states for these professionals, but the license requirements are different for each state.
Audiologists can expect to make upwards of $62,000 annually, and some make closer to $100,000 annually, depending on their education and the area where they work, or if they specialize in certain hearing or ear problems. While there is a Union for Audiologists, only about 15 percent of the existing professionals are members of that Union.
