The practice of blessing your food

Living a life full of abundance starts with recognising the daily happenings that are actually major gifts. Having food to eat and being able to choose what you put into your mouth and nourish your body with is a major blessing. Everyday, multiple times no less, so many of us are able to cook up meals and sit down to a plate of food that helps to keep us alive, happy and healthy. 

How would your relationship to food be different if you recognised each meal as a gift? 

I started singing before every meal while I was in India. Before this, I was usually but not consistently saying a prayer of thanks before dinner. Since returning from India though, I’ve kept up the practice of singing a prayer before every meal. Before breakfast, lunch and dinner, we close our eyes, fold our hands at heart centre and sing a Sanskrit chant recognising the blessing that is food.

It feels so good to pause before eating. The act of singing or saying a prayer brings comfort to the body and mind, sends positive vibrations out into the space and makes meal time a special, ceremonial occasion. 

Ideas for prayers

You can sing in English, Sanskrit or any other language for that matter. You can speak instead of sing, say a few positive words – the choice is for you to make. You can be creative each time or create a specific prayer that you say before very meal. The important thing is to pause before scoffing, and recognise just how blessed your life is.
