Colorectal Cancer Causes, Risks, Symptoms & Treatments

-

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer and large bowel cancer, is the third most common form of cancer in the Westernized world. Colorectal cancer kills more than 650,000 people each year.

Who Can Get Colorectal Cancer?

The specific causative factors for colorectal cancer, like many other cancers, are largely unknown. There are several cumulative precursors activities which may lead to a later diagnosis of colorectal cancer, however. These possible causes include:

  • Family History of Cancer
  • Age
  • Polyps of the Colon
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Smoking
  • High Fat Diets
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Human Papilloma Virus
  • Low Levels of Selenium
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Environmental Factors
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Symptoms

In the beginning stages of colorectal cancer, the symptoms tend to be more vague and mistaken for some other form of illness. The most common symptoms include weight loss and fatigue.

As the cancer grows, the symptoms will appear more localized to the colon area. These later symptoms may include:

  • Bowel Habit Changes – These changes may appear as constipation, diahhrea, bloody stools, mucous laden stools, black stools, and bowel obstruction.
  • Rectal Bleeding
  • Abdominal Tumor
  • Blood in Urine
  • Air in Urine
  • Vaginal Discharge (in women)
  • Weight Loss
  • Anemia
  • Jaundice
  • Liver Enlargement
  • Blood Clots

Over the Counter Treatments

The symptoms of colorectal cancer are often treated under the care of a physician. The prescribed medicinal or alternative treatments may interfere with over the counter treatments of the disease.

Alternative Treatments

Doctors have been treating cancers with alternative medicine with more frequency all the time. The alternative treatment of colorectal cancer will often include two stages of treatment. The first stage focuses on dietary changes and the second on supplementation.

Due to the fact that high fat diets can often lead to colorectal cancer, the first stage of alternative treatment for the disease will be dietary changes. These changes will often include the reduction of foods containing Vitamin B-6. Vitamin B-6 is needed for cancer growth in the body. By reducing Vitamin B-6, the body will not be able to provide the base nutrients needed for cancer growth.

Other dietary changes will often include the introduction of Whey proteins and foods high in Limonene and Citric Acid. Limolene helps regulate the Ras cancer gene which tends to be overly active in most cancer cases. Citric Acid helps to prevent glycolosis which essentially starves the cancer cells be preventing the energy needed for cell growth to be delivered to the cancer cells.

Supplementation of herbs is the second stage of colorectal cancer alternative treatment. The most common herbs prescribed include:

  • Parsley
  • Vitamin D
  • Green Tea Extract
  • Anti-Oxidants
  • Whey Protein
  • D-Limolene
  • Tocotrienols
  • Niacin
  • Choline
  • Selenium
  • Perilla Oil
  • Licorice Root Extract
  • Panothenic Acid
  • Melatonin

Medical Treatments

As colorectal cancer advances in stages, surgery may be needed to remove the cancer. After surgery, many patients will undergo chemotherapy or radiation to ensure all of the cancer cells are destroyed and reduce the chance of recurrence.
