Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting times of your life. It can also be one of the scariest times of your life. A life is growing inside of you, and while this is a joyful experience, it can also be quite risky for you and the child. You need to know the 7 crucial factors for your safety, and the safety of your baby.

Getting Proper Care

First and foremost, you need to make absolutely certain that you are getting good prenatal care during your pregnancy – preferably from the moment that you discover that you are pregnant. This care is essential, because many problems can be avoided through this care, and other problems can be detected early and dealt with.

7 Crucial Factors during Pregnancy to Be Aware Of

  1. Smoking – Smoking can cause a slew of problems for you and your unborn child. Women who smoke consistently have smaller babies, and many of those babies have lung function problems. Smoking also increases the odds of SIDS and stillbirths.
  2. Alcohol and Drugs – Everything that you put into your body is going directly to your child. This includes alcohol and drugs. Your baby could actually be born with an addiction to alcohol or drugs if you used them during your pregnancy. This is addiction is not the most horrible thing that can happen when drugs or alcohol are introduced to the fetus.
  3. Nutrition – Nutrition is incredibly important during pregnancy. There are some foods that are perfectly acceptable when you are not pregnant, which must be avoided when you are pregnant. Make sure that you discuss proper nutrition for your pregnancy with your doctor, and also consider hiring the services of a dietician.
  4. Exercise – Too often, women go from one extreme to the other concerning exercise. They either change nothing about their exercise habits, continuing to work out, or they completely stop all exercise. Both are wrong. You still need exercise while you are pregnant, and this should be discussed seriously with your doctor.
  5. Over-the-Counter Medications – Do not take any over-the-counter medications, including herbal remedies, while you are pregnant without first discussing it with your doctor. Your doctor should tell you that all such medications should be avoided if possible, but there are some instances where your doctor will recommend an OTC medication for you.
  6. Injuries – As your belly expands during pregnancy, you are more prone to injury. Your balance is thrown off a bit, your posture changes, and your chances of tripping or falling increase. Use extra caution when you are expecting. Move slower and pay more attention to what is going on around you.
  7. Environmental Factors – Women who live in areas where there is greater pollution in the air tend to have the most problems during their pregnancies, and the baby tends to have a greater risk of being born with health issues. If you live in such an area, you might want to spend more time indoors, breathing air that is as clean as possible, or consider relocating for the duration of the pregnancy.

Dealing with the Myths

It never fails that other women will be forcing their own pregnancy stories and myths on you during your own pregnancy. These women can literally scare you to death concerning the pregnancy, the labor, and the birth. Do not listen to these tales. Some of them are greatly exaggerated, and some are very rare. Listen to your own body – and of course your own doctor.
