Cysts Treatment Options & How to Remove Them

-

Cysts are small pockets of liquid or solid infected areas. These bubbles of solids, liquids or gases can vary greatly in size or location, severity in pain levels, and in the severity of concern. Some cysts are harmless annoyances while others can be deadly conditions that are not even noticed until the damage has been done.

Who Can Get Cysts?

Anyone can bet cysts. Depending upon the type of the cyst, the age ranges for the condition varies greatly. Because a cyst is primarily an infected pocket, there is little that restricts the ages of the individuals who can get the condition. There are even reports of infants and neo-natal children having such conditions.

Causes of Cysts

The different causes of cysts vary due to the different types of cysts. Most cysts are simply the body’s handling of an infected section of tissue. The cyst itself can be a method for the body to limit the spreading of the infection as it attempts to destroy the infected areas. Another cause of a cyst is the body’s reaction to irritation and stress on a section of tissue, causing damage and an influx of white blood cells. Final causes of cysts include tumors or inflammation.

Symptoms of Cysts

Symptoms of a cyst include pain and irritation around the site. Other cysts are not painful, but are often discovered by feeling a solid or liquid bubble under the skin or on the skin. Internal cysts are often noticed by doctors during physical exams because there will be pain while palpating the abdomen. However, it is possible for the cyst to go symptom free until the cyst gets so large as to cause damage to the surrounding tissue, if the body is unable to destroy the infection.

Over the Counter Treatment of Cysts

While most cysts are treated with antibiotics, some cysts can be treated with over the counter medications. Such medications include antibacterial creams and lotions.

Alternative Treatments for Cysts

Alternative treatments for cysts include heat or cold packs to limit the pain that a cyst can cause. Soaking the cyst is also a method commonly used to keep the skin soft and tender while allowing for water to enter and wash out the cyst. These methods are met with limited success though and are only recommended for small cysts that are not particularly painful. It is recommended that one visits a doctor with any cyst that is of concern.

When is Medicinal Treatment Necessary?

Medical treatment becomes necessary if the cyst is large, painful, or in a worrisome spot, such as near an eye or mouth. The medical treatment is necessary in such situations because of the potential for the cyst to be a symptom of an underlying condition and for the cyst to be cleared quickly, limiting the pain that it can cause.

Medical treatments for cysts often include antibiotics and lancing procedures. If the cyst is in a dangerous location or has an appearance of potential cancerous material involved, surgery is a viable option. Such treatment is not always necessary though, and most cysts can be treated with lancing and antibiotics.
