Drug Addiction Rehab

Drug addiction has become a major issue in our world, and because of this, the career outlook for a substance abuse counselor, who will work in the area of drug addiction and rehabilitation, is very good.

Substance abuse counseling covers many different types of addictions, including alcohol addiction and drug addiction. While the general concept of breaking the addiction to drugs, alcohol and other types of addiction are generally the same, there are some differences. Among all types of addictions, it is thought that drug addiction is the most deadly. This makes your work as a substance abuse counselor who specializes in drug addiction even more important.

As a substance abuse counselor in this field, you can opt to work in a hospital, a mental institution, or a drug rehab facility. There are even some professionals in this field who work for private individuals. Most individuals in this field, however, will work in a rehabilitation center, but there are other opportunities, such as working in schools or for charitable organizations as well.

The amount of income that you will earn as a substance abuse counselor will vary, but the average salary is $33,000 annually. Of course, with more education, you can expect to earn more. There are many programs for training available, and some last as little as six weeks, while others can last for up to two years. In most cases, depending on where you will be working, you do not need a Master’s degree or doctorate, and in some cases, you do not even need a bachelor’s degree. Naturally, however, it is always better to at least hold a bachelor’s degree.

This type of work can be very rewarding, but you must realize going into it that it can also be very heart breaking. As hard as you might try, you will not always be successful at turning someone away from a life of drugs, and a dark outcome.
