Emergency Medical Technician Training

If you have an interest in the medical field, you react well in emergency situations, and you have an interest in someday becoming a paramedic, you may want to start with Emergency Medical Technician training to become an EMT. Becoming an EMT is much faster than becoming a paramedic, but it is a great step in the right direction.

emergency team gets ready to depart

As an Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, you will work for an ambulance service, hospital, or fire department in most cases. When a 911 call is received that involves injuries or illnesses, you will be dispatched to render aid, and to help transport the patient to the hospital for more advanced treatment. The EMT is responsible for accessing the situation and transporting the patient to the hospital. Paramedics render more advanced medical aid than EMTs.

In terms of education, there are two levels of education for Emergency Medical Technicians. You should start with the EMT-Basic program, and then continue with the EMT-Intermediate program. Programs typically arrange the required courses to match what is required by the state for licensing in the state where the school is located. If you will be attending a school outside of the state where you plan to work, you need to make sure that the courses you are taking, and the hours of coursework are acceptable for your state board exams.

To be accepted to an EMT training program, you must have a high school diploma, and you cannot have a criminal record, as the requirements for state board exams require you to not have a criminal record. Once you have completed your training and received your license, you will have to take refresher courses or continuing education courses, as required by your state to retain your license.

Paramedics earn more than Emergency Medical Technicians. EMTs can expect an entry level salary of between $9 and $11 per hour, depending on where they live. However, with more education and experience, you will earn more.
