Energy Medicine

-

Energy Medicine places the concept of energy at the heart of a person’s well-being. Energy Medicine focusing on healing through the activation of the body’s natural healing energies. Energy that may have become disturbed, weak or out of balance, is restored. A trained practitioner may administer medicine, or in some cases it may be self-applied. This type of Medicine may be used to address emotional and mental disorders, physical illness, and to promote peak performance, high-level wellbeing, and joyful living.

Energy medicine may be used in conjunction with other conventional medical approaches, or as a complete system for self-help and self-care. It is one of the five domains identified by the United States’ National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM).

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine

One of the twenty-seven institutes within the National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Complementary Medicine was founded in 1991. The mission statement of the NCCAM advises that it is dedicated to the exploration of alternative and complementary healing practices through rigorous scientific research. The NCCAM is responsible for funding a variety of studies into energy medicine.

The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies

The International Society for the Study of Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine (ISSSEEM) is an international, interdisciplinary, non-profit organisation committed to the exploration and application of the subtle energies of human potential, consciousness and healing. ISSSEEM publishes a variety of this medicine related journals, including Subtle Energies and Bridges Magazine.

The Theory

Energy medicine practitioners recognise energy as a moving, living force that determines health and happiness. Measurable energies, such as electro-magnetic energy, as well as more subtle energies, are seen as the basis for the infrastructure of the physical body. The balance, flow and harmony of energy in the body effects the health of the body. Any illness in the body can be related to a disturbance in energy.

For vibrant health, there a few principles that should be followed: a person should have freedom of bodily movement; specific movement patterns should be followed so to encourage energy flow; it should be recognised that all the elements of a person’s body are essentially energy; energy must be balanced, if internal energies do not balance external energies, ie. a person’s environment, illness may result.

Types of Medicine

The NCCAM separates therapies involving measurable energies, to which it applies the term “Veritable Energy Medicine”, from those related to unmeasurable energies, termed “Putative Energy Fields”.

Veritable Medicine therapies include: light therapy, magnetic therapy, radiation therapy, sound therapy.

Medicine Involving Putative Energy Fields include: qi gong, acupuncture, homoeopathy, distant healing, therapeutic touch and related concepts.

Benefits of Energy Medicine

Energy Medicine is often combined with conventional western medicine. This can result in conventional practices being more effective. Injuries such as broken bones and lacerations have been known to heal faster than normal following the application of this medicine. Auto-immune illnesses, which have not been effected by conventional approaches, have responded when treated by the medicine.

It is seen as a preventative treatment. It allows for disruptions in energy to be treated prior to the appearance of the more obvious symptoms that are observed by conventional medical approaches. By correcting these energy disruptions early, the illness can be stopped before it develops into heart failure, cancer, or a nervous disorder. In some parts of China, where this medicine has a long history, it was common practice to pay a doctor for the maintenance of good health. If an illness occurred it was up to the doctor to provide more intensive treatment at no extra cost.

Energy medicine not only maintains good health, but it promotes it. Today, athletes, including Olympic athletes, are using these techniques to ensure they are performing at their peak.
