I’m a total movie junkie. I watched 120 while in Bali for 4 months, mostly I’d have to say they were rubbish. So I love it when I come across a movie which I feel really contributes something. This movie does just that.. it’s info-packed and entertaining. And it’s about some of my favourite subjects, food, nutrition and politics, or more precisely, people empowerment.
you wont see cows getting slaughtered or cruelty to pigs or tons of seriously unhealthy people on junk food binges.
Here’s why I think it’s a really important piece of work:
“Food Matters” is an extremely well-edited, info-packed
film that explains in plain English why in our affluent societies people are sicker and unhealthier than ever. How can this be? How come people are eating more than ever but are seriously malnourished, meaning they have to keep eating.
For years, I’ve done regular cleanses and even for a period of my
life, weekly fasting (in my late teens when I took on the yoga
lifestyle), which fell by the wayside for a while, as I traveled the
world, until becoming pregnant with my first child 26 years ago..
Inspite of thinking I had a reasonably healthy diet, when I went high
raw, I felt so much better and clearer..
……what I’ve always wondered, is why isn’t more emphasise put on, food as medicine.
When I took my seriously asthmatic daughter to the doctor’s. I suggested that I was experimenting with getting her off dairy, but was told that wouldn’t make any difference.
… and I couldn’t believe it!
With all the anecdotal evidence, it wasn’t even given a consideration. Not meaning to slag off doctor’s, but the general acceptance within the medical world that what you eat doesn’t matter that much seems counter intuitive ( love that word).
Here’s what’s going on:
Our planet’s soils have been stripped of nutrients, and we have an unprecedented exposure to environmental chemicals, so
it’s more important than ever to think nutritionally..
How nutritious is the food I’m eating?. How alive is it?
How about thinking about food economically, like, what is the quality of fuel I get from eating this, calorie intake weighed up with nutrient density and aliveness. Am I paying for a load of “empty stuffing” ? literally. or worse ‘toxic empty stuffing”.
And you’ll see that food is a political subject.
I’m not into being all doomsday and conspiracy theorising, but I am big on consciously consuming. And I’m all for education which empowers people to take their health, vitality and life back into their own hands.
And films like FOOD MATTERS are really doing a great job
of educating people like you and me, so we at least know
what’s going on and can make informed decisions.
This movie was just the inspiration I needed to get me back on track. It’s very compelling and motivating, and sometimes we all need a reminder to stay on track, especially when we’ve slipped into a sleepy blur by our cultural, habitual and media fed eating habits. Love that toast and butter.!!.. but hate that “dragging my ass around ” feeling, the next morning.
Even if you don’t have time to watch the whole film, at
least watch the trailer… it’ll really get you thinking.
p.s. I’m really excited by the fact that independent film
makers are creating such great work…
