How to Boost Your Metabolism

Metabolism means a lot to your body. It has an effect on your effort to lose weight, to maintain your weight, and on your energy level as well. As you age, however, your metabolic processes slow down significantly, and you will actually have to work to keep it up to speed.

Eat Your Way to Optimum Metabolism

The first way to boost metabolism is to eat. Your metabolism doesn’t even think about kicking into gear until you get food into your system, which is why breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

This is also why it is important not to allow hunger to ever creep in. keep yourself fed by eating every two to three hours while you are awake, without consuming too many calories for the day. What you eat also matters. Fill up on protein as much as possible, as protein is essential to your metabolic function.

Exercise to Boost Metabolism

Aerobic exercise is a great way to boost the metabolism, which is why most experts agree that you should get an aerobic workout done as early in the day as possible. Most experts agree that this boost in metabolism lasts the longest throughout the day.

You also increase your metabolism when you build muscle. Along with aerobic workouts, make sure that you are doing strength training exercises as well, on a regular basis to help keep your metabolism in full swing.

Experts also suggest other types of exercise that have proven to increase energy and make you feel refreshed. These exercises include Tai Chi, Yoga, and Reiki. While these are slower exercises that do not burn as many calories in a short period of time, they are thought to be very important because they not only build strength, but they force you to breathe deeply as well and they actually will help to boost the metabolism.

Get the Right Vitamins for Your Metabolism

B vitamins are very important for metabolism. The most important of the B vitamins is B-12, but all B vitamins play an important role. Even if your multivitamin contains B-12, you should probably take a stand alone B-12 supplement as well.

Other important nutrients for increased metabolism include L-Carnitine, Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10, and Nicotinamide Adenine Finucleotide (NADH). Green Tea has also proven beneficial for increasing metabolism. If you are looking for completely natural ways to boost the metabolism, consider using the Chinese Herb Schizandra as well.

Breakfast for Increased Metabolism

One of the best ways to stimulate your metabolism is to eat breakfast.  There are some foods that can give an added boost to this stimulation of the metabolism.

Why Use Breakfast?

Many people who are attempting a weight loss program often skip breakfast under the misconception that this will help with their weight loss goal.  By skipping breakfast you can actually impeded your progress as skipping this meal can slow down your metabolism as your body attempts to conserve energy by using only the energy that is necessary until it receives more fuel for energy.  Eating breakfast begins the metabolism for the day, giving you the necessary fuel for energy and the beginning of calorie burning necessary for weight loss.  Eating breakfast can also help prevent binging later in the day due to excessive hunger and between meals snacking for something high in carbohydrates to boost your sluggish energy.

Best Breakfast Drink

You can make a breakfast smoothie to help stimulate that metabolism if you are limited for time in the morning.  Mix it up and take it with you, drink it on the way to work or school.  Using low-fat milk as a base you can add protein powder of a flavor of your choice, add 1 or 2 tablespoons of a grain such as oatmeal or granola and some fruit like blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or bananas. If you want you can also add crushed ice.  Blend it all in the blender and you are ready for the day.

Best Breakfast Foods

Remember that breakfast does not have to consist of breakfast foods.  The truth is that simply by giving your body any type of nourishment in the morning will help to increase your metabolism, some foods are simply healthier for you and can cause an improved boost in the stimulation of metabolism.

Protein such as eggs, dairy, lean meats and even peanut butter can make a healthy start to your day. Add some fresh fruit, fiber and nuts or grains and you have given your body the best boost of metabolism you can give it to start the day.

If you are in a hurry you can eat a half of a bagel or use multigrain bread topped with low-fat deli meat like turkey, chicken or ham and add a slice of low-fat cheese. You can eat this cold or toast it in the toaster oven for a warm breakfast.  This can be eaten on the go as well.  Another recipe that combines healthy ingredients for a good change and a tasty breakfast is to make a modification of the traditional banana split.  Peel and slice a banana and cover it with low-fat yogurt, either plain or one that contains berries, add some grains such as a cereal with high fiber or granola or oats and some fresh berries and nuts like almonds or walnuts.  You can eat this right away or once you get to work.  It is a good combination of the foods necessary to give you the best breakfast foods to get your metabolism working for you.
