On Loving Our Beautiful Aging Bodies

-

There was a video on my facebook newsfeed recently of a group of “old ladies” dancing together stiffly in public, having a great time. It made me laugh, because these delightful women were unafraid to be exactly who they are.

Are old people who look like old people supposed to live infirm and joyless, preferably away from the rest of society?

Balderdash I say!  And, “You GO girls!”

While there are exceptions, most of us are less limber, more wrinkled and more “freckled” than we once were, as we move into our 60’s, our 70’s and beyond.  Our tummies are a little rounder, our hair a little thinner, and our nipples descend gradually down to our belly button.

So What? That’s actually how we were designed!

Can a naked aging body be beautiful just the way it is? Can we take both pleasure and pride in the bodies that will carry us through the rest of our lives – just the way they are today? Can we look in the mirror after a shower and smile at our naked sassy selves, daring to be aging? Can we still undress in front of our beloved and not be shy?

If your answers are not full-throated “yes,” help is on the way!
“Therapeutic photographer” Jade Beall takes on the unhealthy cultural image we carry about beauty with her “Beautiful Bodies Project.” (Link: www.jadebeall.com)  Her intent is to photograph women of all sizes and shapes at all stages and conditions of life, and to show us our beauty. Self-loathing is stealing our joy, and she means to bring us all out of hiding.

With a lot of deliberate media buzz, Jade has recently published a book of un-retouched, partially nude and very beautiful photographs and stories called, “The Bodies of Mothers,” (Link: www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Body-Project-Bodies-Mothers/dp/0989983862). This is the first in a series of books where she intends to show us our beauty at every size and shape and age and in every physical condition.

Her next book, “The Bodies of Grandmothers” (the actual title is not known yet), documents our beauty as we age.

Jade and others in the body beautiful movement have helped countless women to pledge to love our bodies, and to be happy to live and love in them, just exactly the way they are on any given day – for as long as we are given to live in them. I hope you join us.

I know only too well about aging! I’m 40 and everything is going south, as they say. I have recently come to the conclusion that I have simply got to go with the flow. Come on ladies, embrace those aging signs!
