Believe it or not, there are only about 8500 dermatologists in the United States. With more advanced dermatology techniques being perfected each day, with better insurance coverage of these services, and with more affordable prices of these services, the demand for good dermatologists is growing greatly. You can break into this field with dermatology courses which have become available online.
The job of a dermatologist is to diagnose and treat skin conditions, including conditions of the scalp. This may include acne, warts, rashes, loss of hair, athletes foot, scarring, and even problems with finger nails and toe nails. Not all dermatologists have the education and licensing required to perform surgery, but some do – and these professionals are referred to as dermasurgeons. These special surgeons often perform procedures that include chemical peels, liposuction, botox treatments, phlebectomy, laser surgery, and more.
Becoming a dermatologist does require a great deal of education – approximately six to eight years of college, including medical school. What you must understand is that as a dermatologist, you are a doctor, but you have chosen a specialty. Many of the courses that you require can be taken in an online environment, but many will also require classroom attendance and hands on training as well. Because of time constraints, you should consider taking as many online courses as you can towards your degree, but you also need to make sure that those courses will be accepted by the college where you are obtaining the remainder of your education, to keep from repeating courses.
As a Dermatologist, you can expect to earn between $150,000 and $250,000 annually, depending on the geographical area that you serve. Other factors that will determine your income include your education, your specialty, the facility that you work for – or the facility that you own, and more. Typically dermatologists that have their own private practices are likely to make higher incomes, and those who are also surgeons will make the highest incomes in this field.
