Health and wellness experts, also known as health and wellness specialists are generally individuals who work in various fields for the promotion of good health or health prevention. The degree needed for this type of work may be called a Health and Wellness Degree or a Health Studies Degree. These professionals may also be referred to as health educators, although they are not teachers in the traditional, classroom sense of the word.
Health and Wellness Experts work in a variety of places, including hospitals, counseling centers, rehabilitation centers, schools, and public or government agencies. At the minimum, a bachelor’s degree is required for this type of work, and a Master’s degree is preferred. The roles that health and wellness experts fill are very broad, and it is wise to have a specific area of health and wellness in mind when you start your education. Certification is also typically required, and the most preferable certification is CHES, or Certified Health Education Specialist.
Regardless of the area that you choose to specialize in, however, your main job as a health and wellness expert is to teach and advise individuals and groups on the importance of health matters, prevention, and living healthy lifestyles. Your goal is to prevent health problems and illnesses on the individual and community level through information and education. Most health and wellness experts will focus their careers on one health topic, such as diabetes, cancer, or heart disease, although this isn’t always the case.
Despite the education required, health and wellness specialists are usually in the field because they are passionate concerning their specialty. This is said because the pay is not what you might expect with the education required, with the median income being between $30,000 and $60,000 annually. Few health and wellness specialists make more than $70,000 per year.
