The Paleo Diet, or the Paleolithic Diet, is also informally known as the “caveman diet.” As the name implies, the Paleo Diet mimics the types of food that our ancestors ate during the Paleolithic era. It is a diet that focuses on eating a lot of meat and less grains and sugar – in other words, more “natural” food and less processed food.
Since the diet seems to focus more on “cavemen” do you think this is good for women as well? The answer is, yes. Women can also benefit from the Paleo Diet, and not just for losing weight. It could also improve a woman’s health – which includes the health of her hormonal and reproductive systems.
Below are pros and cons of the Paleo Diet in relation to women.
It Helps You Cut Back on Sugar
The Paleo Diet is famous for being “anti-sugar” because sugar is considered to be the major culprit for people becoming overweight and obese. Sugar is also bad for women, not only because of the potential weight gain, but also because it produces fat cells, which in turn produces estrogen. The excess estrogen could lead to hormonal imbalances, resulting in PMS, cysts, mood swings and cramps.
It Helps You Say No to Grain
Giving up grain could be a challenge because grains have become a staple in many people’s diets. However, grains are found to be the reason for the development of some autoimmune diseases found in women, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and rheumatoid arthritis. Grains are also known to take away calcium and magnesium, which are extremely important for women.
It Makes You Appreciate Fruits and Vegetables
Since the Paleo Diet focuses on natural food, you must eat lots of fruits and vegetables. For example, many dietarians recommend blueberries as they contain a large amount of antioxidants, which are great in keeping your skin healthy. Most fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients and vitamins, which promote an overall healthy body.
It Makes You Cut Back on Dairy
Since cavemen didn’t have the means to produce dairy products, they are excluded from the Paleo Diet. However, women need calcium in their bodies to keep their bones healthy, especially during their senior years. Though some experts argue that dairy products could lead to weight gain, it is still a negative point against the Paleo Diet, if women should be interested to be on it.
