Recommended Solutions for Premature Ejaculation

Here’s a list of the most commonly used methods for dealing with early ejaculation problems. Talk to your doctor about which of these solutions makes sense for you.

Stop and start technique

Requires that the man engage in sexual stimulation until he realizes that he is about to ejaculate. Stimulation is then removed for about 30 seconds and resumed. These steps are repeated until ejaculation is desired. In the final step of the sequence, stimulation is continued until a climax is achieved.

Squeeze technique

Involves sexual stimulation until just prior to the “point of no return.” At this time, the man or his partner gently squeezes the tip or the base of the penis for several seconds. Further stimulation is withheld for 30 seconds and is then resumed. The man or the couple may choose to repeat the sequence and continue stimulation until ejaculation occurs.

Drug therapy

Some studies have showed that low doses of antidepressants such as Anafranil, Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft have been effective in prolonging ejaculation by up to 10 minutes. Success rates range between 60% and 95%. It is important to note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drugs for this purpose.

Side Effects: Clomipramine (Anafranil) has been shown in controlled studies to be effective, but dry mouth and drowsiness can be side affects. Paroxetine (Paxil) and sertraline (Zoloft) generally cause fewer side affects.

To date, no studies have reported on the long-term effects of drug therapy for premature ejaculation. These drugs are increasingly being used, while new, more selective and potent ones are in development.

Desensitizing creams

Applying a desensitizing cream can help to lessen the sensations felt by a man during intercourse, presumably enabling him to maintain an erection for a longer period of time. They can be applied outside or within a condom.

Side Effects: Some men and women complain of burning or decreased sensation and less pleasure.

Alternate sexual positions

Engaging in intercourse while on your back gives your partner control and allows you to feel more relaxed and able to guide your partner. A study of 110 men found that those who thrust in a circular motion, rather than straight in and out, had greater control of ejaculation. This technique may forestall orgasm by reducing the stimulation at the head of your penis.

Sessions with licensed sex therapists and/or marriage counselors may address and identify marital and relationship issues that often can lead to premature ejaculation.
