Saxifraga granulata or Pashanbheda – Ayurvedic Herbs For UTI, Kidney Stone, Burning Sensation Of Urine

Saxifraga granulata or Pashanbheda is one of the prominent ayurvedic herbs for acute and chronic urinary tract infection (UTI), stone in kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra.

Pashanbheda has powerful effect on metabolism so that it helps to break renal stone into smaller parts or gravels and prevents the tendency of body to form stone in urinary tract.

Latin Name: Saxifraga granulata or Bergenia lingulata

Family: Saxifragaceae

Sanskrit Name: Pashanbheda, Asmaghana

Hindi: Pattharchura, Pakhanbheda, Silaphada

Habitat: It is present in Himalayan foothills from 4000 ft to 10000 feet height.

About The Plant:

This is a small shrub whose stem comes out from the cleavage of stones in mountain region.

The Root: It is thick and red in color and measures only 1-2 inches. Several branches spread out from this root.

The Leaves are typical – with circular shape of 5-10 inch diameter. The leaves are serrated toward edges. The upper surface is greenish and lower surface is reddish.

The Flowers: April to May is the flowering period. Flowers are white to pinkish in color. 

Chemical Composition:

  1. Tannic Acid in roots (14%)
  2. Gallic Acid
  3. Starch 19%
  4. Glucose 5%
  5. Minerals
  6. Albumin
  7. Slimy material 2.25%
  8. Ash is 12.8% with richness of calcium oxalate.

Saxifraga Granulata As Per Bhava Prakash Materia Medica:

β€œIt shatters stones, is cold in nature, bitter and astringent in taste, cleanses the urinary bladder. It expels out forcefully the waste materials of body through anus. It destroys disorders like piles, abdominal disorders, dysurea or difficulty in urination, renal stone, pain in chest, vaginal disorders, urinary disorders, pain, spleen disorders and wounds.”

Properties: light, unctuous, sharp

Taste: bitter and astringenet

Vipaka (Metabolic Effect After Digestion): like pungent taste

Veerya or Biological Potency: Cold

Specific Effect: Ability to break renal stone

Medicinally Used Part: Root

Dosage: Powder 3-6 gm twice a day.

Decoction: 50-100 ml twice a day.

Effect On Doshas:

It calms down all the three Ayurveda doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Topical Action – Skin Health:

It displays anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. According to folk remedies, its paste is applied over gums and teeth during dentition period.

Pashanbheda and Digestive Health:

Due to astringent effect, it could be used in diarrhea and amoebiasis.

Pashanbheda and Heart and Blood Vessels Health:

It strengthens the heart and checks bleeding disorders.

Saxifragaa granulata and Respiratory Health:

It helps expel out sputum due to expectorant property.

Saxifraga granulata and Kidney, Ureter, Bladder and Genitals’ Health:

Women get benefit in white discharge or leucorrhea, heavy menstrual bleeding and painful menstruation. It helps in recurrent and chronic UTI, difficulty and painful urination, burning sensation in urine. The metabolic tendency for renal stones goes away with its use. It helps to loosen the bonds of renal stone and breaks it into smaller gravels.

Pashanbheda and General Health:

It could be used in mild feverish conditions due to mild fever or inflammation.

On Prolonged Use:

it is given to relieve symptoms of heavy use of opium.
