Shiatsu Courses

Shiatsu is a popular form of massage, which is actually combined with acupressure as well. Some mistakenly believe that shiatsu is acupressure, but it isn’t. You can become a shiatsu practitioner by taking the appropriate shiatsu courses, but typically, you will add shiatsu to another form of massage therapy in your practice as well.

Shiatsu is a Japanese Body Work technique that uses pressure to stimulate certain meridians. It is used to increase and regulate the flow of energy in the body. At the same time, however, it is also a form of massage therapy, which is why licensing is usually required, as well as an education in massage therapy.

Depending on the state that you live in, you may need licensing to practice shiatsu. Typically, this is the licensing required for a massage therapist. Because shiatsu courses alone are seldom offered, you may find that the best way to obtain training is to take a full massage therapist program that includes shiatsu as well. However, there are courses that are specific to learning shiatsu, as you will see.

No matter which course you select for your training, you will want to make sure that the course offers what you need for the Shiatsu Society Continuous Professional Development requirements. You will also want to ensure that the course is enabling you to be eligible to sit for your state board exam for massage therapy as well, so that you can be licensed to practice.

There are countless opportunities for those who take shiatsu courses – particularly if you are adding shiatsu to an existing massage therapy practice or another healing art. After completion of your studies, and with the proper licensing, you can open your own practice, or work for another massage therapist, in spas, in chiropractor’s offices, or with physical therapists. Ideally, it is wise to work for someone else before opening your own practice, or to work with someone else while building your practice.
