Spice Up Weight Loss and Diabetes Maintenance with Cinnamon


Cinnamon perks up more than your toast or favorite snickerdoodle cookies. This everyday spice has a number of health benefits which include lowering blood pressure, weight reduction and even natural insulin production. For thousands of years, cinnamon has been used to cure anything and everything from embalming to indigestion to bacterial infections.

In the diabetes field of medicine, researchers have found that cinnamon has the inherent ability to lower your blood sugar levels and at the same time, increase your natural production of insulin. This positive response has been a godsend to many diabetics and has helped many patients control their disease.

Cinnamon – A Natural Diabetes Fighter

Cinnamon has such strong insulin-like properties that some people with a mild form of diabetes may consider trying this spice before succumbing to insulin medications, under a doctor’s care of course. The properties of cinnamon work best on people with type II diabetes.

A number of diabetic studies have been conducted and the results have been very promising. The groups using cinnamon as part of their daily diabetes maintenance showed almost a 30% drop in their glucose levels – remarkable given that many people fight daily to stay within normal range with this disease. The additional positive side effect of lowering triglycerides means that blood pressure lowers as well as the bad cholesterol in the body – two factors that exacerbate diabetes.

Losing Weight with Cinnamon

Cinnamon has a number of abilities and several of them aid in weight loss. First of all, this spice was used to cleanse the stomach and intestines of parasites and microorganisms such as fungus and bacteria believed to cause bloat and weight gain. After a cleansing, nutrients are better absorbed and food is processed by the body more quickly, with waste products effectively flushed out of the body.

This pungent spice also is an energy booster, giving you the energy you need for exercise. In other words, cinnamon can help you better burn fat stores when you exercise in such pursuits as weight training and cardio routines. Because glucose is being processed in the body rather than being stored in the blood cells, thanks to cinnamon, you get that boost of energy you need to work out instead of procrastinating.

As an antioxidant, cinnamon fights free radicals and even contains plenty of other nutrients like manganese. In addition, this spice helps block fats, meaning fat cells do not develop as easily as before.

How to Take Cinnamon

You need up to two teaspoons of cinnamon a day to be beneficial. There are many ways to incorporate this spice, depending on your preference. Since this spice comes from the bark of an evergreen tree, this bark is often harvested to create special teas. Tea is a great way to ingest cinnamon. Cooking with cinnamon is another way to benefit; many people take cinnamon capsule supplements as they will have higher concentrations of what you need for good health and weight loss. You can also mix powdered cinnamon with a spoonful or two of honey and swallow it each day.
