St. John’s Wort & Anxiety, OCD, Phobia, Dermatitis

Hypericum Extract In Anxiety, OCD, Phobia, Dermatitis, Menstrual Disorders And Inflammatory Disorders

St johns wort or Hypericum extract beneficial in many disorders like anxiety, OCD, social phobia, atopic dermatitis, menstrual disorders, HIV and some inflammatory diseases. These benefits of hypericum extract are less studied than its antidepressant effect. These are supported more by its traditional use and to a little extent by small clinical trials.

In many clinical studies of depression with hypericum extract, it was noticed that the secondary symptoms related to anxiety were also relieved.

The topical application of hypericum extract is popular in atopic dermatitis. However, caution should be taken to avoid exposure to Sun light.

Despite lack of clinical data, some herbalists use it in conjunction with other herbs in treatment of OCD.

St johns wort is in use for perimenopausal symptoms and in Pre-menstrual Syndrome.

Social phobia didn’t respond to hypericum extract.

Hypericum extract reduced the damage caused by white blood cells as a result of oxidative processes in inflammatory disorders.

St. John’s Wort And Anxiety Disorders:

There is only one study that has reported the antianxiety effect of st. john’s wort along with valerian root. Valerian is in itself a very good antianxiety herb. Many other studies have found the effect of st. john’s wort in anxiety.

Many of the depression patients reported in various studies that besides helping in depression symptoms, st. john’s wort has also helped in anxiety symptoms. This herb is used traditionally for anxiety despite lacking clinical data.

St. John’s Wort And Atopic Dermatitis:

Positive results have been shown in mild to moderate atopic dermatitis by the cream of st. john’s wort in a small study. These effects weren’t compared with other standard drugs like glucocorticoid creams. So this effect can’t be recommneded based on this study and further studies are necessary.

St. John’s Wort And Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD):

Some small studies have suggested benefits of st. john’s wort in OCD. However, due to lack of clinical data, it can’t be recommended for OCD.

St. John’s Wort And Peri-Menopausal Symptoms:

Menopause is the physiological stage in a female’s life when menstrual cycles cease to occur. Menopause is associated with great hormonal changes that are reflected both physically and emotionally.

Though there is definitely lack of clinical data in this regard. However one study has found st. john’s wort and black cohosh to be superior than placebo in climacteric complaints including psychological symptoms.

Premenstrual Syndrome PMS and St. John’s Wort:

Premenstrual syndrome is the distressing group of symptoms felt before the onset of menstrual bleeding. Only one small study has indicates possible benefit of hypericum in PMS.

St. John’s Wort And HIV (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus):

Despite some antiviral effect against human immunodeficiency virus in laboratory, st. john’s wort should be avoided in HIV patients because of the possibility of side effects and some drug interactions with drugs like PIs (Protease Inhibitors) and NNRTIs (Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors).

St. John’s Wort And Social Phobia:

Hypericum extract failed to show any positive effect on the patients of social phobia.

St. John’s Wort Anti-inflammatory And Antibacterial Activity:

Tradition use of st. john’s wort as an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent is validated in this study. Any herb has hundreds of phytochemicals and thereby can have a vast range of effects and activities in our body.

In this study scientists investigated the in vitro effect of hypericum extract over human white blood cells myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. MPO helps in producing hypochlorous acid that has strong oxidant and inflammatory tissue damaging activity.

Researchers found that hypericum reduced the oxidative activity of white blood cells and thereby the damage resulting from oxidation.
