10 Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle

Many of my clients want to give up bad habits like overeating, binge watching Netflix, etc, and be more productive in their lives.

The questions I’m continuously asked are:

  1. What are the advantages and benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle?
  2. What are the choices for a healthier lifestyle?
  3. What is the danger of not living a healthy life?
  4. What things are needed for a lifestyle that is healthy and also fun?
  5. And so on…

Most of the questions are from women in their forties and older, yet more and more young people are trying to live healthier lifestyles now too. And it’s so important with the health issues facing us all today. It’s definitely an issue adults of all ages should be concerned with. Below you can read some of the healthy lifestyle choices you can make starting today.

10 Things Needed For A Healthy Lifestyle

1. Healthy Diet and Food Choices

Although this is not a new concept, I firmly believe you are what you eat.

We all have a routine we follow for eating. Not every individual will eat the same foods, however you can make healthier choices in your diet.

2. Fitness and Physical Activity

Fitness gives your body the conditioning it needs and works hand in hand with a healthy diet. Fitness also helps prevent and reduce many health issues. Read more about Fitness and Physical Activity.

3. Stress Reduction

Stress plays an important factor in your health. Although some stress types are good, there are many that aren’t. Good stress helps you stay motivated with a plan of action helps you be creative and successful.

When you experience stress that gives you the feeling demand exceeds your reserves, it can impact your health in a negative way. Read more about Stress Management and Reduction.

4. Sleep

Insomnia and other sleep disorders affect over 60 million people in the United States alone. Medication is fast becoming a solution, but it’s only a short-term solution.

Stress can be a major factor in sleep disorders and applying different types of techniques, you can train your mind to relax and allow you to sleep. My favorite method is relaxation through meditation tapes.

Establishing a sleep pattern is very helpful. Train your body and mind to a time each night to sleep and a time each morning to awaken.

5. Proactive Health Care

In today’s world, being proactive with your health care is more important than ever. Regular physical check-ups should be included in your lifestyle.

If you don’t have a healthcare provider or doctor, you should find one and establish a relationship. You need to be able to speak with your doctor about your health problems, and finding one you like and trust are important.

When you establish a relationship with your doctor, they also have the advantage of having your family and medical history.

Put your mind at peace by knowing your health status and that you have a partner in your doctor that is dedicated to your health treatment and care.

6. Self Awareness and Acceptance

Self awareness is important in allowing yourself to identify exactly who you are. Knowing what your character is, what your thoughts, values, weaknesses and strengths are defines who you are.

Low self esteem and negative thinking are major impacts on your health, both physically and mentally.

Personal growth is an asset that allows you to find your purpose in life, your spirituality and inner peace. Self acceptance is crucial in life because it not only impacts you personally, it impacts all of those around you. Read more Self Awareness and Acceptance.

7. Substance Abuse

Substance abuse has to be mentioned because of the alarming rates of usage in today’s world.

Alcohol and drugs have become an escape for many people. Studies and research show the major impact this has on your health.

Smokers not only impact their own health, but the health of those around them.

8. Social Activity

Social activity is important for singles and families. Connecting with others brings more meaning into your life. Of course there are many ways to do this. Socializing with friends, neighbors, and family is a common connection.

Socializing in your community is also important. Being a part of where you live gives you great satisfaction and allows you to contribute to your community as well.

9. Healthy Relationships

A healthy relationship, whether it be your significant other, a friend or family member, is a big part of your new healthy lifestyle.

Love is one thing we all need and it keeps us well.

Keep your relationships active, visit your family and friends. Take time to write or call them.

Making new friends establishes a connection with people that may have a lifestyle similar to yours. This can be invaluable, having friends that understand your lifestyle and your challenges.

Take the time to “be alone” with your significant other. Date each other… yes exactly! Make the time to go out to a quiet dinner, or enjoy a weekend get-away. Time passes quickly and you’ll miss out on some of the best times if you don’t make the time for each other.

Communication is always the key, one that is often left out of the 10 things needed for a healthy lifestyle.

10. Time Away From It All

I’m a homebody, I enjoy staying at home immensely. However, even with working at home, I need to get away!

Whether it’s a vacation, a weekend away, or even a day away, your body and mind need rest from your daily routine.

We can all be guilty of the “but they need me” syndrome. However, it’s quite amazing how refreshed and productive you’ll be when you return from some time away.

Our bodies weren’t built to be “at (you fill in the blank) _____” 24/7. Knowing when to rest and enjoy time away is an essential part of living a healthy, consistent lifestyle.

11. Bonus: How to Set the Foundations for a Healthy Life

One of the most important and life changing events that you can engage in is the process of setting the foundation of your life as a whole.

Focusing on the areas of physical well-being, emotional and mental health, as well as optimizing your health overall should be your top priorities.

While many of us have all of the best intentions when it comes to placing a high emphasis on these areas, we fail when it comes to implementing the action required to achieve these goals and seeing real results.

You may attribute this to the fact that it is too challenging.

However, this is not the case at all. The real problem is the inability or failure to make a personal promise and/or commitment to yourself.

Let’s take a look at the importance of setting the foundation for your healthy lifestyle.

Your Purpose

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to make a personal promise and commitment to yourself to establish a healthier lifestyle.

One of the first things you have to really look at is… Are you doing this for you or for someone else? To be successful in your endeavors this has to be for you. Do not attempt to change your life because someone else wants you to, or asks you too because it doesn’t work.

Making a Commitment

When you can see the reasons behind creating a healthy lifestyle – then you can make a personal commitment to yourself to do what is necessary to uphold that commitment. That’s when you will be successful in implementing healthy lifestyle choices.

When making a commitment to yourself to create healthy lifestyle, you are taking responsibility for your choices and you are taking control of the means that are necessary to cause a reaction to occur.

If your goal is to lose some weight by controlling the types of foods and the amounts of foods that you consume, you can easily accomplish this task.

In addition to this, if you make a commitment to tone up your arms, you can easily do this by engaging in exercises that will assist you in your tasks.

When you do not perform in a way that is necessary, it is important that you hold yourself accountable and that you do all that you are able to in order to get back to your commitment.

Your Goals

When you lay the foundation for your healthy lifestyle, it is important to consider the goal that you want to achieve.

Once you determine a specific goal, it is then that you can successfully highlight the procedure that will be necessary to complete your goals. But stay focused and don’t get hung up on setting goals.

We’ll call this the health plan.

Here, create short term and long term goals that are related to that in which you want to achieve. Once you have an idea of where you want to go, and how you want to get there, it is time to move on to the next step.

This is to focus on the goals that you want to achieve, and not to focus on the overall process that will be needed in order to reach your goal. This way, you are not overwhelmed.

When you have a goal or two in mind it is time to focus on the fact that small, necessary changes will need to be made in your day to day routine.

You may want to evaluate your diet, your exercise regime, your mental focus, and similar things in nature.

It is important to know and understand that all change starts with an initial modification.

You do need to understand that a change must be made in order to bring about the change that you desire. By doing so, you will be extremely successful implementing your lifestyle choices.

Do it one day at a time in moderation and you will achieve a lifestyle filled with health and happiness.
