How to Get Rid of a Vaginal Yeast Infection (Candida)

A vaginal yeast infection is a common condition with women, but is often either shrugged off as being due to excessive vaginal discharge, or is treated with self medication. Yeast infection or Candida can prove to be extremely problematic if it is left untreated. Yeast can transform from its benign form to an extremely infectious state and engulf most of the systems in the body, including the brain.

Candida Vaginitis

Candida Vaginitis is a typical problem caused by Candidiasis, which is characterized by inflammation of the female genitalia. Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida albicans, a parasitic fungus that can infect the mouth, skin, intestines or the vagina. The fungus is normally present in each one of us in its yeast form and its growth is controlled by friendly bacterium like acidophilus, commonly found in yoghurt cultures

Candida Causes

Candida albicans, also known as yeast, is natural flora that exists in the intestines, mouth, and vagina. Besides excess intake of sugar, pregnancy, birth control pills, hormonal supplements for menopause, chemical douches, spermicidal products and fissures caused by tampons are some of the major causes of vaginal yeast infections. If you experience vaginal itching, redness or inflammation in the vaginal area, the following safe and natural remedies may be beneficial.

An imbalance in the intestinal flora where good bacteria are killed due to excessive use of antibiotics, unhealthy lifestyles and a weak immune system usually cause over growth of yeast. If not checked in time, Candidiasis can manifest in nearly 100 symptoms. Vaginitis is one of the most common forms of Candida infection in women. As yeast is normally present in the vagina also, such growth causes introduction of new yeast in the vagina and causes Candida Vaginitis.

Candida Symptoms

Candida Vaginitismostly causes itching, redness, burning, irritation, and a whitish or yellowish vaginal discharge. Although there are some very effective conventional, alternative and home remedies for treating Candida Vaginitis, if the infection lasts for more than a week accompanied by an offensive smelling discharge with fever and general feeling of illness, it may be a sign of some other infection. Such instances require professional help to see whether you require yeast infection treatment or any other treatment.

Candida Prevention

Several creams for local application are available over the counter. However, if the condition is severe a physician will need to prescribe oral medication. Most of the over the counter creams contain anti-fungal drugs and work in a similar fashion – the cell walls of the organism are broken by the drug, eventually killing it.

You can reduce your risk of developing Candida Vaginitis by improving your hygiene, keeping the genital area cool, clean and dry and using cotton under garments that allow free circulation of area. However, if you see some Candida symptoms it is better to look for immediate Candida treatments lest the condition takes a turn for the worse and becomes systemic (affecting the entire body system). Candida Vaginitis can cause extreme discomfort and embarrassment in public. Approximately three quarters of yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans but self diagnosis is not advisable since similar symptoms can be produced by other types of Candida as well.

Prevent the growth of yeast through air circulation. The idea is to let air circulate as much as possible. Try to keep the vaginal area dry and clean, as a damp and moist environment helps Candida grow. Avoid wearing tight clothes and sleep without tight undergarments. If you must use a panty hose, select those that come with a cotton crotch. Do not dust cosmetic powder in the vaginal area. Most of these powders have a starch base, which is conducive to yeast growth.

Candida Treatment

Strictly speaking, vaginal yeast infections should be first treated with home remedies before any conventional yeast infection treatments like allopathic ointments, creams, or oral drugs. This is all the more important if infection occurs during pregnancy– especially early pregnancy– as the safety of the baby is at stake.

If you are wary of conventional allopathic medications because of the side effects that they are known for, you have a choice of alternative medicines. Homeopathic remedies can provide an equally effective Candida treatment. Herbs like garlic, tea tree oil, and Pau d’Arco are also known for their properties of combating Candida.

Dietary modification, and supplemental acidophilus are an essential part of any Candida treatment that you may choose. You will be required to cut down on your sugar intake or avoid it totally and include yoghurt, an excellent source of friendly bacterium.

No Candida treatment can be complete without dietary control. Avoid sugary foods, carbohydrates and commercial foods that contain chemical additives and preservatives. During the infection, eat at least three to four glasses of yogurt and you will be rewarded with a complete vaginal . Yogurt contains bacterium that inhibits the growth of yeast and should be consumed on a daily basis, even after the symptoms disappear.

A Sitz bath is a super way of cleaning and douching. Mix salt or vinegar (half cup) to a shallow bath and sit with knees apart. This relieves the itching sensation, and the result can be perceived almost immediately.

Biotin Candida Treatment

Biotin is a B vitamin that helps in body growth. It is a part of the B-Complex, originally thought to be a single vitamin, but is now separated into several B vitamins. Its properties of acting as a co-enzyme have been a subject matter of serious research in recent times. Enzymes are complex proteins that are produced by cells and act as catalysts in specific biochemical reactions. A co-enzyme, on the other hand, is a small molecule (which is not a protein) but is essential for the activity of some enzymes. It is suggested that a co-enzyme is sometimes a vitamin.

The role that biotin can play in treating Candida is primarily based on its ability to prevent yeast, especially Candida albicans, from converting to its virulent invasive fungal form. In presence of biotin, yeast is unable to change into its mycelium form, which is the vegetative part of a fungus consisting of a mass of branching thread-like filaments. As biotin plays an important role in metabolism of fats and proteins that we consume, it is used as a supplement for yeast infection treatment to deal with Candidiasis, the overgrowth of Candida albicans.

Biotin supplementation is indicated in some of the prominent symptoms of Candida like:

  • Systemic, chronic, or recurrent fungal and yeast infections due to Candidiasis
  • Intestinal yeast infections
  • Oral yeast infection (Thrush).
  • Female genital yeast infections
  • Male yeast infections (Jock itch)
  • Other disorders associated with Candida like irritable bowel syndrome, leaky gut syndrome, and intestinal parasitic and bacterial infections

Unrestricted growth of Candida normally converts it to its systemic form when it starts affecting entire body systems. The fungal or systemic form of Candida first attacks the liver and then proceeds to affect the lungs, heart, brain, and other organs.

A diet that restricts growth of yeast is commonly used for treating Candida. In addition, foods that contain friendly bacteria, like yogurt, are recommended to aid the process of treatment. Many times diet and probiotics, the beneficial bacterium, are unable to totally eliminate Candida albicans from the system. Probiotics like lactobacillus acidophilus find it difficult to take their roots within the system due to the excessive prevalence of Candida albicans. It is here that biotin can play an important role. Research has established that optimal levels of biotin are effective in controlling even the systemic form of the yeast.

Before using topical creams or oral drugs as Candida treatments, it is important to get a correct diagnosis, because self treatment may ultimately lead to eliminate the option of conventional treatments for good. Allopathic drugs, if used recklessly, can lead to rendering them ineffective for you. The mantra for all treatments should be that if you do not know what it is, you cannot cure it. On the other hand, certain herbs, a natural and healthy diet, vitamin supplements (up to maintaining optimal levels) have no side effects, and at the same time, go a long way to boost your immune system to fight disease naturally.

Candida Herbs

Candida or candidiasis can be termed as a modern disease, since the so-called modern lifestyle is the main cause behind it. A lifestyle that lays more stress on saving time and quick recovery rather than a reliance on natural foods and self-healing is probably the main cause of high levels of Candida in the system. High levels of dependence on commercial foods, antibiotics, and birth control pills kill friendly bacteria and weaken the body’s natural immune system, which in turn, invite conditions like Candidiasis.

Candida is the overgrowth of a harmless parasitic fungus, Candida albicans, which is present in every individual for removing putrefied matter that remains in the intestines due to improper digestion.

Conventional allopathic Candida treatments are not able to provide a long-term cure . Over time, the drugs become ineffective, as Candida albicans develops resistant strains.

Prevention of Candida is always better than curing it, because once it colonizes the body, driving it out is a long procedure that may take up to a year or more depending upon the severity of the infection.

The ultimate source of the problem is the digestive system, and therefore it is imperative that the digestive system be in near-perfect health. Low acidity levels that lead to indigestion and improper bowel movements are the contributing factors that promote growth of Candida albicans. Any yeast infection treatment must address this basic cause of Candidiasis. Candida herbs provide help in two ways – they help to keep the intestinal tract fully functional and strengthen the immune system.

  • Garlic has multiple benefits. It counters fungal infections, stimulates the immune system, and helps in easy elimination. It is also a powerful agent for killing parasites in the body and helps in regulating blood pressure. Eating raw garlic may be problem with some, but it is equally effective if used liberally in your daily diet along with other foods. Natural garlic is the best, but if you must use garlic tablets, make sure that they are suitably coated in a manner that the garlic releases deep inside the intestines, which is where it is required.
  • Golden Seal, Oregon grape root, and Barberry contain Berberine that can effectively combat Candida and its limit its growth. These herbs also help in digestion. Golden seal should not be taken liberally, as it tends to irritate the liver. Periodic breaks usually help to overcome this problem. Golden seal can be taken as tea for treating Athlete’s foot, a common condition in fungal infections. However, pregnant women should avoid Golden Seal and Barberry.
  • Licorice root is another herb that can indirectly help in treating Candida. It prevents sugar cravings.
  • Chamomile tea stimulates the production of stomach acids to maintain the alkali/acid balance in the digestive system. It is most effective immediately before or after meals. Fennel and cardamom are good substitutes for chamomile tea.

A natural diet and herbs that keep the digestive system fully functional and increase immunity are long- term solutions for Candida. If you already have Candida, it is important to facilitate cleaning of the digestive tract with increased intake of water, and avoid constipation at all costs.

Do not use chemicals inside the vagina. Avoid douching with chemical formulations. Use lukewarm water mixed with vinegar, instead. Use mineral oil, petroleum jelly or egg white for lubrication during intercourse. These are devoid of chemicals and will not irritate. Avoid using baby oils, as they contain perfume and can cause irritation. Petroleum jelly is not advisable for use with condoms, as it may cause holes in the rubber. Use plain water for washing.

Avoid having intercourse during a vaginal infection, as it increases irritation and can also be passed on to your partner.

Consult a doctor for the best advice for treatment.
