There are so many different types of yoga it can be difficult to know which to choose. There is no denying the restorative nature of this form of exercise but if you are more interested with active movement and achieving a burn there are specific types you should look into.
Sometimes called flow yoga, Vinyasa refers to the rapid movement of the body from pose to pose. Elements of this style can be seen in many other disciplines. It is sweat-inducing and gives you the burn you are looking for.
Ashtanga, which is also called Power yoga, is focused on weight loss and strength building. The practice is done at a fast pace moving between vinyasas and holding static poses. Six poses are repeated in sequence and with increased speed.
Hatha actually describes the modern practice of this exercise type itself with Ashtanga, Bikram, and other yoga types but is often offered as a stand-alone class. Typically these classes focus on breathing techniques and basic traditional poses.
There are also many fusion options available both in gyms and on DVD for home use. These fusions include principles of barre, Pilates, ballet, and dance with yoga to create a comprehensive workout option.
In short: if you want a burn, yoga can provide it. The flexibility and strength the poses offer are an added bonus to the sense of calm and freedom that is commonly found in yoga practice.
