What a Colon Cleanse Is

Colon cleansing itself is an “iffy” topic and the reality is there is little prove that detox and cleanse actually remove toxins from your body.

That being said we know first hand the benefits of focusing whole heatedly on your health for a 7-day program, as we hold detox retreats in many places around the world.

Every cleansing method is considered “natural”, meaning that it contains no pharmaceutical ingredients. While this can be a good thing, it is also a cause for concern to many people, because the United States Food and Drug Administration do not regulate these products. Herbal and natural products have also come under fire recently on the internet, where anyone and everyone is free to speak their mind and share their opinion. Some of the time, there are fundamental reasons for people to doubt or condemn a product, and some of the time, they do it out of pure speculation.

Let’s take a general look at some products and “kits”. Most products you will find online are either some sort of concoction of powders, pills, and some of them even have enemas.

That being said, what the heck are you supposed to look for in a product, to help you make a good decision when making a choice of what to purchase and use? We will tell you!

The first thing you need to look for in a quality product is a high amount of fiber. Fiber is no magical or secret ingredient, as it is part of our natural food intake, and something our bodies must consume on a regular basis. When a product aims to help “cleanse” your digestive system, one of the most important ingredients is also one of the most simple, and that is fiber.

What fiber does for us is helps to soften food once it has been digested from our stomach. When food is broken down within our bodies, it can then pass through and our body can empty it, making room for more fresh food. If you were to picture what the outcome would be if you put a meal in a blender, you could quickly see that it might still be pretty solid, and not something that could easily pass through your intestines. Fiber is introduced to the food, which helps break it down further, and make it more malleable so that it can pass through our bodies without “clogging” our system, which is what has happened when a person suffers from constipation.

  • Fiber can relieve constipation.
  • Soluble fiber can reduce cholesterol, triglycerides, and other contaminants in the blood, improving circulation, and helping to prevent heart disease.
  • In women, research suggests that high fiber diets can reduce the risk of breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers.
  • Fiber can regulate blood sugar levels, which helps prevent diabetes. In some cases, it can help people who already suffer from diabetes, and reduce their symptoms.
  • High fiber can help prevent diverticula, a condition where small pouches develop within the walls of the colon. Diverticular disease can cause diarrhea, constipation, pain, and infection.

As you can clearly see, a high concentration of fiber can be really good for you. Most of us are simply very undernourished due to the foods we eat, so a good colon cleansing system can help regulate us and give us the necessary nutrients in which we lack.

Now, without speaking on any specific products in particular, most of them do offer fiber. However, what else do they offer, and how can it help you?

The answer to that one is easy. Probiotics!

Probiotics are actually quite amazing. These little gems will actually enter your body and assist your digestive system by increasing the natural occurrence of the good bacteria that are within. Basically, each and every one of us has certain bacteria that live and thrive within our bodies. These bacteria are necessary for the proper breakdown and processing of food and nutrients, and probiotics will actually help your body better produce these necessary bacteria.

What can probiotics do for you?

  • In women, there is a naturally occurring bacterium within the vagina called “Lactobacilli”. This bacterium is necessary to maintain proper healthy bacteria levels within the vagina. Sometimes, Lactobacilli can be reduced, and this can allow infections and negative bacteria to form. Probiotics help promote this natural, helpful bacteria, thus reducing the odds of getting an infection.
  • Your gastrointestinal tract is full of helpful bacteria, which helps to defeat sickness and kill bad bacteria within your body. Often times, this bacteria can be reduced so much that you can get very sick, which is commonly seen when overseas travelers get sick. Probiotics can help keep these good bacteria within your intestines, which reduces the likeliness of you getting ill and getting diarrhea, as well as shorten the duration of a sickness you may already have.
  • Some studies show that using probiotics can help to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Roughly, 60 million Americans suffer from IBS, which causes pain and discomfort in the abdomen, as well as constipation and diarrhea.

Ok… So far, we have fiber, probiotics, and antioxidants… There can’t possibly be anything else one of these systems can provide me with, right? Wrong.

Do you think you get enough vitamins and minerals with the food you eat?… No, neither did we.

Last but not least, most good colon cleansing systems will flood your body with essential vitamins and minerals. These are more basic nutrients that your body needs to properly breakdown and digest food, as well as retain nutrients that are found within the food you eat. Having an unhealthy colon and digestive system can result in faster or slower bowel movements than your body is used to.

This means that food you eat will usually not deliver all of the nutrients it has to offer, because your body is not processing them correctly. The reason for this is because when your body is persuaded to flush out toxins and empty your intestines, your body may become dehydrated, and this may result in a severe lack of necessary electrolytes within your body. A simple and safe way to remedy this would be to drink plenty of “hydrating energy drinks”, which contain electrolytes.

As we mentioned earlier, a good diet is usually a very necessary step in the cleansing process if you would like to be successful.

A high intake of fruits and vegetables is always good for you, but consuming a good amount of the darker green variety of vegetables, such as broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, wheatgrass, spinach, and more, on regular daily basis, will really help your body flush toxins, and will also really improve your body’s ability to clean itself out, especially when you’re performing a colon cleanse or detoxification program.

So, now that you know the basics about detox and cleanse, which program or product should you choose?

We simply cannot recommend one product over another for everyone. The reason being, everybody is different, and more specifically, each and every one of us has our own unique dietary needs.

For instance, some of us have a regular diet that contains very large amounts of healthy fiber, so we would not necessarily need extra fiber as much as the next person does. On the other hand, we may have more toxins resting latent within our bodies, and thus we need to place more of an emphasis on the ingredients that can help to flush these harmful toxins from our bodies.

Because of this, it would be very tough for us to recommend one single product in particular. Each and every one of us will benefit differently from any given product. Therefore, we recommend looking at some of the more popular products on the market, and making a decision based on your particular needs.

Another recent trend that we’ve seen pop up and really flood the market lately are products which contain ingredients that will destroy, and thus help rid your body of, worms, parasites, and all of the other nasty things that are rumored to live within most of our bodies.

It is no secret that many of us will, at one point or another in our lives, be infected with some type of worm. While the thought is pretty disgusting, it is something that most of us must face. Therefore, when one of these products destroys these worms and their eggs, or any other bad parasite that may be living within us for that matter, they can then be flushed from our bodies. And, what better time to do this, then during a colon cleanse?

    The colon is a very important part of the body. Therefore, it would do you well to learn as much about this central digestive organ as possible.

    What you see below are some random facts for you:

    Problems in the colon are more likely to cause partial or complete bowel obstruction.
    Cancers causing partial bowel obstruction can cause the following problems: constipation, narrowed stool, diarrhea, abdominal pains, cramps, and bloating.
    Brightened blood in the stool may also indicate a growth near the end of the left colon or rectum.
    More than 90% of colon cancer cases occur in people (men and women equally) age 50 and older. In other words, age the no. 1 risk factor for the disease.
    Cigarette smoking can increase the risk of cancer death by 30%-40%. It often accounts for up to 12% of cancer fatalities.
    Colon is extremely common. To make matters worse, the incidence of such increases as individuals get older.
    An infected Colon is a perfect breeding ground for parasites like worms.
    Fairly recent reports indicate that about 1. 5 billion people have roundworms. This is the third most common human infection in the world.
    It is believed that up to 15 pounds of accumulated gunk from rotting half-digested red meat and highly processed foods can remain in your intestines.

    More Important Info

    Your colon thickens the mucus lining. This is what helps prevent any toxic substances from entering your body. Now, imagine your colon always doing this every time you pop that red meat into your mouth.

    This is something that your colon is not designed to do. If this does happen, it is a signed that this organ of your body is working much harder than it should.

    At the very worse, your system has gone haywire, especially your colon. Often what you are left with is a black, tar-like substance. This usually grows to at least one-half inch thick.

    At the very worst, it solidifies and clogs up your colon. This of course causes quite a number of potential problems and could at the worse lead to cancer.

    The colon is one of the most important organs of the body. This is one place where the processing of all our food is done.

    Problems that are directly or indirectly related to poor colonic functioning include the following:

    Minor-A majority of colon health issues are minor. However, symptoms such as gas and bloating along with constipation or diarrhea should be addressed. These minor symptoms as well as slight abdominal pain or discomfort could only mean irritable bowel syndrome or other minor problem. However, these symptoms could mean much more.

    Moderate-The above mild problems may worsen in severity. If so, this is an indicator that something could be seriously wrong. You might also experience more frequent headaches and feel sick more often. Hopefully you have been checked out long before this time. If so, there is a chance that any onslaught of cancer or disease can be prevented.

    Severe-Colon issues are not limited to upper gi (gastrointestinal) problems. At some point blood in the stool, fever, swelling or joint pain may occur. These are symptoms that are indicative of a more serious underlying disorder.

    Hopefully a colonic or rectal cancer screening has occurred before some of these symptoms appear. Otherwise, the problem is not as likely to be irreversible. It still can be but you may need to make some major lifestyle and diet changes in the process.

    Prevention

    Ultimately your goal is to prevent serious problems such as colonic or rectal cancer. You also want to prevent other digestive problems such as poor live, pancreas, or gull bladder functioning.

    One main way to combat serious health problems would be to change your diet. Stop eating all those high-fat animal foods and replace them with leaner meats. Eat smaller portions and increase fiber and liquid intake.

    You also are advised to stop using tobacco and cigarettes. It also is advised that you cut down on or eliminate caffeine and/or alcohol.

    If you are not a very active person you may also want to find a way to incorporate more physical activity in your day. A short daily walk would be a great start. It is advisable that you work yourself up to 30 minutes minimum physical activity per day.

    As far as exercise is concerned, one way you can get it is by helping people. If someone calls you up asks you to move boxes, or if you decide to take on a more physically-related type of employment that counts. The more exercise the better you would be, without overdoing it of course.

    Colon cleansing is such a controversial topic that it helps to gain expert views on the subject. According to Dr. Rothfield people who eat Western diets have a tendency to digest food slower than people who eat a lot of fiber.
    However, evidence shows that the body itself is also quite good at detoxifying the system. The human body is very complex and is quite self-sufficient in the way it removes unwanted waste, too.
    Still, it seems that professional opinion says in some cases a colon cleanse cannot hurt. However, drastic steps may not necessarily be needed because the body has many different ways of getting rid of waste.
    This is mostly true, however, if you eat a balanced diet with fruits and vegetables and less fatty foods. Not eating so much “junk” food such as chips and candies also helps keep the digestive system as clean as possible.
    A new type of therapy sometimes is recommended for colon cleansing for some people. It is called chelation therapy. This is a process that helps people get rid of heavy metals from the body by way of a certain drug.
    However, even this remedy is not without its faults. It can cause toxins to accumulate in the liver and kidneys. Therefore, you need to be careful.
    One of the ways to prevent toxicity while undergoing this treatment is for people whose heavy metal levels are near normal. Also, note that hair sampling has often been used to determine bodily heavy metal levels but this is thought to be inaccurate.
    There may be a better way for people to regulate heavy metals. This would be to add calcium, zinc, and iron to your diet. This can further block absorption of lead into the body.
    Still, a balanced diet with sufficient fiber is always the best way to keep your insides clean. Another important tip to remember would be to drink plenty of water.
