If you are a nurse, and you wish to increase your income, you can actually specialize in a variety of fields to accomplish this goal. One such specialization is wound care. For this type of specialization, you should check into wound certifications courses online.
Wound Certification is actually known as Wound Care Certification. These nurses may also be called WOC Nurses, or Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses. These nurses specialize in the treatment and care of wounds that are obtained through disease, injury, or even medical treatments, such as surgery.
The purpose of this specialization is to help patients wounds heal in a proper and fast manner, while avoiding potential complications, such as infection. Most WOC Nurses will work in a hospital setting, but many also work in nursing homes and home health care. Very few will work in private doctor’s offices.
The responsibility of these professionals is to assess the wounds, to develop a written treatment plan, to clean and dress wounds, to monitor the progress of healing, and to educate patients on care for their wound. These professionals are always on the lookout for infections as well. In some cases, wound care nurses will also work in programs that educate other professionals, such as nurse’s aides in nursing homes. In these programs, they typically teach wound prevention, along with basic wound care.
Actual certification is earned only through three organizations, but all of these organizations will require you to take courses that make you eligible to take a certification examination – and these courses can be taken from numerous sources. The three certification agencies are the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board, or WOCNCB, the American Academy of Wound Management, or AAWM, and the National Alliance of Wound Care, or NAWC. Programs are generally only available if you are already a Registered Nurse, and you hold a bachelor’s degree.
